How To Make A Tassel
We show you step-by-step how to make a tassel. Tassels make great adornments to your needlepoint. Make a small tassel and stitch it to your needlepoint bookmark, or make a slightly larger tassel and sew it into the seam of a pillow you are finishing.
We have used different colors on our demonstration tassel so you can see the various steps more clearly. You can choose to vary the colors or keep them all the same. Here's how to make a tassel:
Choose the thread you want to make the tassel with. It can be silk, wool, cotton or any other thread but match it to what you intend to use the tassel for. You can even use different colors for the same tassel. The length you need depends upon the size of the tassel you are making. We are making a small tassel, like for a bookmark and so we cut off a length approximately one half yard long. Wind this length around a piece of cardboard. Once again, the size of the cardboard will depend upon the size of the tassel you want. Ours is about 1.5" wide x 2" long.
Thread a piece of yarn/thread about 6 inches long, through the threads at the top of the card and tie tightly. Leave the strings of this thread hanging.
Remove the threads from the card. Wrap another piece of thread near the top of the tassel about 6-8 times. We did this about half an inch from the top for our small tassel. Tie the ends securely. Cut through the loops at the bottom of the tassel and even up the lengths so they are all the same.
